The clock was ticking, and with each passing day, we were one step closer to trading our 4,000-square-foot house for our 28-foot Airstream. Excitement and nervous energy filled the air as we worked through the last details of getting ready for our 5-month honeymoon on the road.
Making Room for the Pets
Our dogs and cat weren’t just coming along for the ride — they were family, which meant their needs had to be carefully thought through. Where would the leashes hang so they were easy to grab? Did the dogs need their beds in the main living area, or could we get away with one in the bedroom? Their toys, of course, couldn’t be left behind (because what’s life without a squeaky stuffed animal or two?). And for the cat, we debated the perfect spot for her litter box. Then there was the water fountain; where could we place it so all the animals could have access to fresh water? These little details added up quickly, but they were part of creating a cozy and functional home for all of us.
Creating a Workstation on Wheels
Since I’d still be working on the road (as my husband is retired), setting up a reliable and comfortable workstation was non-negotiable. But with limited space, I had to ask myself the big questions: Do I really want to haul around a monitor, or should I stick with just my laptop? Where do the pens, paper, and notebooks go without cluttering the space? Did I want to set up the dinette table every single time I worked, or should I carve out a more permanent nook? These weren’t just logistical decisions — they were the key to making sure I could balance work and travel without losing my mind.
And then there was the internet. Enter Starlink — our lifeline to the digital world. It was our safety net, but I still couldn’t help but wonder: would it hold up in every location? What if we found ourselves in a remote spot with no connection? For me, not having internet wasn’t an option. I didn’t want to be known as the girl who “never had internet” in a digital marketing world where accountability is everything. Reliable connectivity was just as essential as food, water, and gas.
Space and Sanity
Every decision — from where the cat’s litter went to whether or not I packed a monitor — was part of a bigger master class in space management. The Airstream may have been small, but it was about to carry not just our essentials but our entire life for the next five months.
After weeks of planning, packing, and triple-checking every last detail, the day finally came — it was time to hitch up the Airstream and set off on our new adventure. With the pets settled, our essentials loaded, and our route mapped out, we pulled away from the driveway with a mix of nerves and excitement buzzing in the air. This was the start of our honeymoon on the road, and first stop on the journey: Detroit.
