Rolling into Katy, Texas for the first time on our journey felt like crossing into another world—and one that never ends. My god, Texas is huge. This overnight stop in Katy, TX was just the beginning of many days in the Lone Star State as we made our way down to Big Bend National Park.

Since it was only a quick overnight, we didn’t pack in too much exploring—but we did manage to stumble into something unforgettable: our very first run-in with Voodoo Donuts. I’m a sucker for a good donut shop, and this one had all the hype. The line stretched out the door, which in donut language translates to worth it.

The shop is known for its wild creations—donuts covered in cereal, candy, and all kinds of toppings you wouldn’t normally expect on fried dough. But the one that had us laughing the most? The infamous cream-filled “dick donut.” Yep, they went there. Naturally, we thought of our really good friends whose last name is Dicks. What better way to commemorate the moment than snapping a picture of the donut with “A Dick for the Dicks” written on it? Sometimes seventh-grade humor really is the best kind. Keeps you young, keeps you laughing.

Our time in Katy was short, sweet, and a little silly—just a pit stop before the wide-open wilderness of Big Bend. But between the Texas-sized welcome and donuts that doubled as comedy, it set the tone for the adventure ahead.
